Sales and Databases

  • Amazon.com

While it seems one can buy just about anything on Amazon.com today, it’s primary focus is still geared toward book sales. To this end, Amazon acts as an extensive database of information related to books, such as whether or not they are in print, what versions there are, basic bibliographic details, reviews and synopsis by professional organizations and the public, price, etc. Amazon.com is such a reliable and credible source of information on books, that many librarians use it as a substitute for Books in Print today. There is an extensive listing of video information as well.

John Moore, August 2, 2006

Culture: Film

  • Hess. J. (Director). (2006). Nacho Libre (Motion Picture). United States: Paramount Pictures.

Nacho Libre is a comedy about a Dominican friar who moonlights as a luchador (body wrestler) to give to the poor and needy children of his orphanage. The film takes place in a small village in Oaxaca, Mexico and captures the essence of Mexican comical sensibilities, such as the elote (corn) turned deadly weapon. The movie is geared toward Mexican-American audiences and Spanglish (a mixture of English and Spanish) is the preferred language of the film. Thought the comedy and plot of the film is universal that all, old and young alike can enjoy with a big laugh and hallelujah.
Elizabeth Felix, June 28, 2006.

Culture: Music

  • Temple, J. (director). (2000). The Filth and the Fury: A Sex Pistols Film (motion picture). United States. Fine Line Features. The film explores the making, the phenomena and the eventual split of the notorious punk rock group the Sex Pistols. The group was possibly one of the most popular and feared punk rock groups in the U.K and the rest of the world. The film utilizes historical footage, concert footage as well as recent interviews with members of the band and the manager discussing the business of music, drugs, angry social youth, punk rock and the internal strife within the band. This is a must see film for any fan of punk rock music.
Elizabeth Felix June 28, 2006.

Includes not only the Western Cannon, but also the emerging cannon of world literature. David Loertscher, Sept. 6, 2006
  • Black, Ann N. (2006) Born Storytellers: Readers Theatre Celebrates the Lives and Literaature of Classic Authors. Teachers Idea Press, Westport, CT.  Reader theatre episondes from: Robinson Caruso, Great Expectations, Rudyard Kipling, Frankenstein, Uncle Tom's Cabin,  and Jules Verne. David Loertscher, Sept 6, 2006

  • Fellner, Eric (producer) & Wright, Joe (director). (2005) Pride and Prejudice (motion picture). United States: Universal Studios. This motion picture adaptation of the classic novel by Jane Austin has all of the hallmarks of a teen hit.  The independent daughter chooses to turn down the suitor her mother wants her to marry, she is strong and rightious defending her sister and fighting for her sister's love, yet when pointed out her own mistakes has the ability to repair the wrong she has caused as well even though her own pride is involved.  Seeing this motion picture with my son (age 19) assures me that this is even a movie teen boys would sit through given the right promotion.

Laura Erickson, June 27, 2006

Lee Miller was an American photographer who began her work in the 1930s and continued through the 40s. Although she began work as a model, she soon established her own studio. Her early work shows some of the influence of Surreal artist and photographer Man Ray. She travelled the world and photographed it. During the war, she became “a correspondent accredited to the US Army, and teamed up with Time Life photographer David E. Scherman.” She was a combat photographer, photographing D Day, the liberation of Paris, and the liberation of Buchenwald and Dachau. She continued her work after the war, and also contributed to the biographies of the famous artists in her life.
