  • Myers, W. D. (1999). At her Majesty’s request: An African princess in Victorian England. New York: Scholastic Press.

Meyers tells the story of Sarah, an African princess, who is rescued by a British naval officer in West Africa after her parents are murdered by enemy warriors and presented to Queen Victoria of England.  The book is based on the original letters she wrote over one hundred years ago and is filled with historic documents and photos. This format makes Sarah’s biography absolutely intriguing as she negotiates the cultural differences and challenges of the change juxtaposed with the majesty of royal living.
